Academic travel, fall semester 2001: We had a twelve hour layover on the way to Africa in Athens so Proffessor Flutti and gang decided to take advantage of the time we had and decided to visit the ancient ruins of Acropolis. We took a bus out into the heart of Athens where we took a train the rest of the way to the ruins. Zachariah, Will, Ashley, Marissa, Corinne and I headed to the Acropolis together and walked around the ruins doing the typical tourist stuff. We spent a few more hours there and headed back to the airport to catch the flight to Johannesburg, South Africa.

At the airport, while awaiting our flight, I made a list of countries that my hiking shoes have traveled in.  I am into stupid sentimental stuff like that! Countries on the list now include:  USA, Switzerland, Italy, France, Germany, Monaco, Czech Republic, Austria, South Africa and Botswana.

My first impressions of Athens were not very impressive.  The area was very arid and the city its self was extremely dirty. Countless stray dogs sauntered the streets, many of them wounded from God knows what. It was a disturbing sight.
