My
favorite place in the world: Interlaken is situated in central
Switzerland in the German-speaking Canton of Berne.
Geographically the most beautiful place in the world, my multiple
visits to Interlaken have fulfilled my Swiss dreams that I have had for
nearly a decade. My first visit
was a solo trip in late October - I
borrowed Chad’s smart car one night and drove there one evening out of
pure boredom. I drove through the
Alps and spent a night at some cheap bed and breakfast place about an
hour outside of Interlaken and in the morning, drove through the
mountains into Interlaken. Initially, I
felt overwhelmed by the sheer size of the Swiss Alps but also fell in
love instantly. I hiked up a
mountain called Niederhorn along the shore of Lake Thun (one of the two
large lakes that surround Interlaken). It
took a couple of hours, but as you can tell from the photographs, the
hike was worth the view. I could
see across the lake and into the Jungfrau region of the Swiss Alps.
I sat at the summit of Niederhorn and daydreamed all day long. My
second trip to Interlaken included my friend from back home in the San
Francisco Bay Area, Dan Murphy. He was was studying abroad in London and
he brought two girls with him: his lady at the time, Adri, and another
friend, Corinne, from school. We
stayed at a hostel called Balmers and headed into the Alps in the
morning. We made a stop in
Grindelwald, a famous winter Swiss resort town, and then headed into
Lauterbrunnen and Gimmelwald. Being
in the Alps was a memorable experience and I knew that I was going to
come back soon. Well it turns out that I ended going back the weekend after with Andrea (Robin’s friend from back home who now lives in Milano, Italy), her boyfriend Antonio, and Corinne once again. We stayed at the same hostel and headed to Gimmelwald once again to enjoy the finest home made bread, yogurt and beef jerky known to man. Corinne and I spent the extra bank to take the tram to the top of Mount Schilthorn (elevation 10,000 ft.) Hollywood check: One of the James Bond films was filmed here! We stayed at the summit for hours looking into and endless sea of mountains. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen! On our way down we stopped by in the town of Murren where we strolled around and reflected on our amazing day. |

Another ill angle shot looking down from a ledge on Niederhorn and down into the city of Thun and the lake. Look at how small everything looks! This is one of my favorite pictures ever.

Corinne and I on top of the world, or so it seemed! This is at the summit of Schilthorn at 10,000 feet above sea level. It was frickin' cold! (Picture taken by another tourist)

Picture of Interkirchen, a small town on the way to Interlaken. This area is known as the cattle region where the cattle wear enormous bells around their necks making a very distinct Swiss sound. This was taken in the early morning when the mist was rolling in.
